The ‘Inter-Hotel Challenge, sponsored by HEINEKEN Beverages Wine Steward of the Year 2023’  Nkanyiso Zikhali, representing The Oyster Box will look forward to a two-week experience in Amsterdam. The 2023 IHC Wine Steward of the Year will be flying to Amsterdam, for a whirlwind exposure to the city’s fine dining milieu and wine retailing with Margot Janse’s team at SAAM, exploring the culture of the city, visiting museums and learning more about the HEINEKEN brand. “The Netherlands is a key source of international tourists for our country. What better way than to experience how they pair their wine and food at home and learn about the wines to which they exposed. That will give the winner a valuable context in building a career,” says Millicent Maroga, corporate affairs director for HEINEKEN Beverages. In addition, the winner will receive meaningful bursaries with the Sommeliers Academy and South African Sommeliers Association (SASA).

Heidi Duminy, Principal of the Cape Wine Academy has awarded the Cape Wine Academy top five performers a Cap Classique Academy Five Star course. “We hope the course sparks a lifelong curiosity to learn more about our world-class Cape wines as well as inspiring many professional career opportunities that wine offers in South Africa and all over the world.”

The IIE School of Hospitality & Service Management has awarded the Runner-Up Wine Steward of the Year, Lucian Hendricks from Mount Nelson, a Belmond Hotel, Cape Town a bursary to obtain an online Higher Certificate in Hospitality Management.

The International Hotel School’s R30 000 online bursary, designed to give candidates the tools to further their business aspirations, was awarded to Nadia Sibanda, Ivory Manor Boutique Hotel for all round Academic Excellence

‘The Wonga Award’ for the Most Up & Coming Wine Steward, Londeka Mkhize representing The Beverly Hills, a R30 000 bursary to pursue an online business course with the International Hotel School from the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) CEO Waseem Carrim says tourism is a critical growth engine of the South African economy. “It provides quality and meaningful opportunities for young people, which is why we support the challenge with such pride.” 

Stunning handcrafted diamond studded gold lapel pins by The Diamond Works Institute will be awarded to the wine steward winners.

Cornelius Suthse of the Sun City Convention Centre took the title of Chef of the Year. He will take up a three-week internship with O&L Leisure Hotels & Lodges who continue to offer unique and diverse experiences, world-class products and services, and overall excellence, which Cornelius will enjoy at Swakopmund’s upmarket Strand Hotel, that is a popular Namibian tourist spot. ‘The Ultimate Lancewood Pastry Chef of the Year 2023’ Phathiswa Plaatjie of The Twelve Apostles Hotel & Spa, is invited to experience three-weeks in France, the home of fine patisserie at the exquisite Château de La Creuzette in Boussac. A ravishing prize where the winner will continue to broaden their culinary skills and at the same time absorb incomparable French flair. The ‘KitchenAid Africa Bio-Wheat Baker of the Year 2023’ Senzo Khumalo, representing The Oyster Box receives a KitchenAid Food Processor while the hotel collects a KitchenAid Commercial Mixer.
