Over a period of 10 years, we have all been privileged to have had incredible support from Distell, which has been generous and unstinting in allowing the Inter-Hotel Challenge to provide opportunities, educate and upskill.
In 2023, Heineken assumed the role that Distell had magnificently played in the past under the name “Inter Hotel Challenge, sponsored by HEINEKEN Beverages.

The Inter Hotel Challenge aims to ignite careers in Hospitality & Tourism.
The first of three regional Orientation Workshops was hosted by 54 on Bath in Gauteng in early August, followed by workshops at SunSquare Cape Town City Bowl and the Durban ICC.
Our extensive program aims to introduce candidates to Challenge partners and judges, featuring motivational and inspirational guest speakers who cover a wide range of subjects such as communication, trends and nutrition. The three regional launches were the occasions where the candidates’ mentors introduced members from their team to industry guests. The first launch was hosted by Southern Sun Hyde Park, with teams from 54 on Bath, InterContinental Johannesburg O.R. Tambo, Ivory Manor Boutique Hotel, Johannesburg Marriott Hotel Melrose Arch, Sandton Sun & Towers, Sun City Convention Centre, Sun City Hotel, The Palace of The Lost City, and Toadbury Hall Country Hotel.
In Cape Town, at Southern Sun The Cullinan with teams from Arabella Hotel Golf & Spa, Lagoon Beach Hotel, Mount Nelson, A Belmond Hotel Cape Town, The Oyster Collection Hotel Group, Protea Hotel by Marriott® Cape Town Waterfront Breakwater Lodge, Queen Victoria Hotel, Southern Sun Cape Sun, Taj Cape Town, The President Hotel, The Silo Hotel and The Twelve Apostles Hotel & Spa.
And in KwaZulu-Natal, at The Oyster Box including Beverly Hills,Durban ICC, Southern Sun Elangeni & Maharani and Southern Sun The Edward.
The host Executive Chefs—Chad Bosman (Southern Sun Hyde Park), Byron du Bois (Southern Sun The Cullinan), and Larry Ramadhin (The Oyster Box) — had the same ingredients that the candidates would have and showcased stunning menus all round featuring WWF-SA Green List SASSI fish sourced by Fish 4 Africa and Pick n Pay, Lancewood, Lurpak, LemonGold seedless lemons, Preserved Botanicals from Floriography and Petals Group, Rio Largo Olive Oil, and Bio-Wheat stone ground flour, all to pair with HEINEKEN Beverages‘ fine wines—Durbanville Hills, Nederburgand Pongrácz — and choice spirits — Amarula, Bain’s Cape Mountain Whisky, Cruz Vodka, Three Ships Whisky and Van Ryn’s Brandy.
The partnerships continued with more in-depth barista national workshops with Avanti Coffee and further training sessions with Cape Wine Academy and Sommeliers Academy, particularly during ‘Grape to Glass’ in September when the Wine Stewards descended upon the Cape Winelands.
The ‘Cook-Offs & Service Presentations’ took place in October, hosted by Capsicum Culinary Studio. The Awards took place at Southern Sun Cape Sun, where the winners were announced on Tuesday 28th November.
