CAPE GRACE REACHING FOR YOUNG STARS 2024
The culinary spotlight once again shines on the Western Cape as Cape Grace proudly presents the 2024 edition of “Reaching for Young Stars,” a prestigious competition that showcases the immense talent of young culinary enthusiasts from various academies. Building on the success of last year’s Mount Nelson Reaching for Young Stars, this year’s event promises to be a transformative experience for the participating students.
Hosted by the renowned Cape Grace in association with Century City Conference Centre & Hotels, this annual event has become the pinnacle platform for budding chefs to demonstrate their culinary prowess and vie for esteemed recognition within the hospitality industry. With the competition now in its 16th year, the program continues to elevate young talents, providing them with opportunities to make their mark on the global stage. The winners will be announced on Thursday 13th June 2024 at the Century City Conference Centre.
Organised by Showcook.com, in collaboration with culinary expert Annette Kesler, the event not only celebrates culinary excellence but also focuses on the holistic development of young professionals. As part of their comprehensive prizes, the victorious recipients of the Cape Grace Reaching For Young Stars accolades will embark on an enriching journey to the United States and France. There, they will participate in international mentorship programs, promising a life-changing experience that will shape their future careers.
Chania Morritt-Smith of Showcook.com emphasises the profound impact of this opportunity, stating, “This international exposure is expected to be a catalyst for these young talents, propelling them toward innovation and leadership in the dynamic hospitality industry.”
In alignment with global sustainability efforts, the 2024 event places a strong emphasis on promoting eco-sustainability. The program aims to raise awareness about the commendable work of WWF-SA, particularly in collaboration with SASSI, while also highlighting zero-waste practices and reducing the use of single-use plastics. Guest Speaker Pavitray Pillay, Environmental Behaviour Change Practitioner & WWF-SASSI Manager, shares insights into the pivotal role chefs play in transforming the culinary industry to be both environmentally and socially responsible.
Expertise in beverages, including wine stewardship and barista skills, is gaining greater prominence in the Cape region. The event recognizes and celebrates the proficiency of young students in this field, contributing to the region’s growing reputation for producing skilled individuals.
Acknowledging the indispensable support of leading culinary academies in the Western Cape, the event organisers commend their commitment to nurturing and developing young talent. The involvement and enthusiasm of principals and academic heads play a crucial role in the success of the awards.
Leon Meyer, General Manager of Cape Grace, welcomes the young students this year, emphasising the hotel’s dedication to cultivating passion and creativity in younger generations to shape tomorrow’s leaders in the world of hospitality.
The National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) continues to be a proud partner of Cape Grace Reaching for Young Stars. Micarlo Malan, Western Cape Regional Manager, Operations of NYDA, notes the importance of skills sharing and global exposure for industry stars, announcing that 21 students have successfully completed their certification, fast-tracking bursaries for potential entrepreneurship and eagerly anticipates the opportunity to engage with this year’s participants.
